Broken Camera

I had originally purchased this Pi Camera on Amazon for use in this project. I had hoped that its wide angle lens would allow me to have a more cost effective number of cameras. As mentioned before, I did some basic testing of the camera when I got it, and it worked well. A few days ago, I went to test the camera on my angle tester, but could not get it to work again. When I attempted to take a photo, either with the command or button, I received the following error:

mmal: Received unexpected camera control callback event, 0x4f525245

I tried reseating the connector cable from both ends, but got the same result. After that failed, I connected the camera via a new cable, and then to a different Pi. Neither worked.

There is a little LED on the camera module. Unlike before when it worked, this light stayed on for the duration of these tests. After a few email exchanges with Waveshare’s support team, I concluded that the camera had become defective. Online research suggested this might have arisen from static electric discharge when touching the camera, or while connecting/disconnecting it. Unfortunately, there is no way to know for certain, and I returned it to Amazon. The few reviews this camera has received on Amazon were poor, and are making me rethink this model choice. I am now re-evaluating the pros and cons of the different types of Pi cameras.
